Arend kneeled and, keeping his center of gravity as low as possible, he used his strong right hand to grasp the man’s right wrist and pulled it toward him. Once the arm and Kisbee were within the gunwale, he grabbed for the man’s armpit and pulled him up until it hooked over the edge of the boat. “Do you have the strength to help pull yourself in?”
“I think I can, if my hands will cooperate.” The man slowly opened the fingers of his left hand.
“Before we go any farther, you’ll need to let loose of that Kisbee so it doesn’t get in the way.”
The man turned his head to face Arend. “All right. But be aware I tied the rope around my chest. If I slide back into the water, I need you to hold onto it or toss it to me again.”
“I’ll let it go, if I must. We have our own Kisbee.”
In the light of the lantern, Stina caught only a glimpse of his face, but her first thought was, the man was young. She watched as her father wriggled the Kisbee lower on the man’s arm and released it into the bottom of the rowboat. The mariner grabbed the gunwale again.
“On the count of three.” Arend grabbed the shoulder of the man’s clothing and hesitated. “What do you have on?”
“A cork vest. It is secured top and bottom by shoulder straps and two straps between my legs. It won’t come off.”
Straps between his legs? Stina blinked and pressed her lips together. He doesn’t realize I’m a woman. She wondered if he would have described it the same way if he knew.
