              As Jude turned right, Quentin prepared to make the turn while glancing back at the woman’s profile. As soon as his gaze alighted on her, he froze in place. Without an awareness he moved, his feet shifted so he faced her. Although her gaze remained on her lap, the profile before him was burned into his memory. It can’t be, can it? Hoping she would turn so he could directly see her face, he waited.

          Through his peripheral vision, he watched Royce Bainbridge stand and move around Mr. Turner.

              “Mr. Thompson, good to see you this evening.” Royce held out his hand to shake. “Is there something I can do for you?”

              His gaze focused on the woman, Quentin ignored Royce Bainbridge’s outstretched hand.

              As soon as Mr. Bainbridge spoke Quentin’s name, the woman flinched. She slowly turned her head until her gaze met his. As she studied his face, her eyes rounded, and she audibly sucked in a breath. With her lips parted, she stared at him. “No. No, it can’t be.” Her whisper barely audible, she gasped and squeezed her eyes shut.
