Saturday Snippet: It Looked Like Something His Sister Would Wear

“Ah, Stina, are you well, min kære datter?” Keeping her gaze on the young man, Mrs. Dinesen dropped the copper pot onto the counter. “Brede, fill the pot again and put the water on to heat.” She walked quickly toward the doorway.

Datter? Again, the word struck John as sounding familiar. He watched as the woman rushed to the two rescuers.

Mrs Dinesen hugged the older man and then patted his arm. Next, she turned her attention to the younger one. Murmuring words that did not carry across the room, she pushed the blanket away from the younger one’s face and began to untie the bow holding the rain hat in place. She shook it next to the door before hanging it on one of the hooks.

John’s brow briefly crinkled as he noticed the knit hat the younger one worked to untie while the lightkeeper’s wife unbuttoned the raincoat. In spite of the trousers and the man’s fisherman sweater worn underneath, the knit cap looked more like something his sister would wear. He grabbed his thighs and widened his eyes as he watched the blonde braid surrounded by loose, stray strands appear once Mrs. Dinesen removed the hat. A girl? No, a young woman. This young woman rowed the boat that rescued me?

“Come, Stina, you need to go to your room quickly and change, then join your far by the stove. You must get warm again, or you risk getting sick.”

              “Ja, Mor.

The voice that responded to lady of the house sounded definitely feminine. Stina? So, not Steve or Stevie. John watched as the young woman’s gaze roamed the room filled with men who had joined the rescue effort and now stood around and drank coffee. As her face turned a bright pink, he lowered his gaze to avoid adding to her embarrassment. With her mother following, she quickly turned in the direction of what looked to be the opening to a hallway. The two women left the room.
