          Orpha’s soft words left Linton feeling guilty. He knew the couple only wanted the best for him. However, the scheme they cooked up would only complicate an already challenging situation. For now, his priority had to be Emma and Lilly, as well as this law practice that allowed him to provide for them. “I’ll go in the backyard and let Samantha know you are ready to return home.” He spun on the ball of his foot and walked down the hall toward the rear.

          Remembering the list of available case law books he owned she was welcome to study, he turned into his home office and reached for the paper on his desk. He straightened, only to have his gaze connect with the scene outside his window.

          Samantha and his two girls sat under a fruitless mulberry tree that had fully leafed out for summer. They all perched on the picnic quilt Emma retrieved from the pantry. Empty fruit jars that he had filled with milk for the girls sat at their sides. He suspected the teacup for Samantha and the plate of cookies would also be seen on the quilt if he were closer. Samantha read from the book Orpha had loaned her—the princess story that prompted Emma to rearrange the pink guestroom. He felt his gaze riveted to the quiet, peaceful scene. It looked right; it felt right.

          Linton sensed someone silently walk up behind him.

          “Of all of them who responded, she’s the best one, you know.”

          Linton continued to stare out the window as Orpha’s quiet voice sounded in his ear.

          “We didn’t have a chance to correspond so we could learn more about her before we invited her to Sonora, because she took the initiative and came on her own. Either way, I would have chosen her for you. You’re a fool if you let her get away.”

          “Orpha, I just don’t know if marrying again it right for me and the girls.” Linton swallowed and shook his head.
