Saturday Snippet: What's Got You Two So Befuddled?

         “What’s got you two so befuddled you’ve forgotten you have chores to finish so we can set up camp and get something to eat?” Hands on his hips, Michael approached his bullwhackers.

           “Well, you was wrong, boss…uh, Mr. Stanwyck. Lookee there.” Jeremy nodded northward. “Them cute girls we saw at St. Joe? You said no sense hoping to socialize with them because we wouldn’t see them again once we got on the trail. There they are.”

          “Yep. That pretty blonde with the blue dress is trying to unhook their lead oxen.” Will pointed. “We figured on going over and offering them a hand.”

          Eyebrows raised, Michael stared at his two men for no more than a second before he turned his gaze toward the neighboring bunch of prairie schooners. He silently studied the four women standing in front of the lead team of oxen. Two were the young girls Will and Jeremy had commented on back at the jumping-off point. One woman appeared to be the girls’ mother. The fourth made his heart skip a beat. With her yellow bonnet hanging down her back, her face and hair were fully exposed. The beautiful, dark-haired woman who had caught his eye back in St. Joseph stood close to the three light-haired females. When said dark-haired beauty turned her head and met his gaze before glancing at Will and Jeremy, he involuntarily swallowed and then experienced a brief sensation of paralysis. Stop it. She’s married to that old man.

          “You see that, boss?” Jeremy reached over and shoved Michael’s shoulder with his hand. “If that wasn’t an invitation to join them, I don’t know what was. Your turn to cook supper. We’ll tend our livestock after we get back from offering to help with theirs.”

          “Stay here, you two.”

          “We’ll be back in the blink of an eye, Mr. Stanwyck. Honest.” Grinning, Jeremy turned so he stepped backwards as he spoke.

          Michael sighed with resignation. “Watch your mouths.”
