Eleanor
The Switchboard Sisterhood, Book 15
by Zina Abbott
Eleanor sighed as she fingered the scarf. She began walking in the direction of her ship once more. “There is so much I want to do to express my true self now I’m free to make my own choices. What about you? What does the real Frankie want from life?” She turned to face him. “Or should I call the real you Franklin?”
“The real me?” Frankie grunted. “If I tell you something, doll, you promise not to hold it against me?” He glanced at Eleanor out of the corner of his eye, and then he turned his gaze forward once more.
“Sure, Frankie. As long as it’s not something bad, there’s no reason to hold something against you.”
“The real me wants to fit in with more people than just those in my little community back home. I want to be able to work where I want without the people around me trying to buttonhole me into tradition.” Frankie sucked in a breath. “I go by Frankie Perry, because it’s more comfortable for a lot of people. They don’t ask questions or give me funny looks. However, when I was baptized, the name on the church register was Francisco Pereira, plus a whole lot of other names in between. When I was a kid, everyone called me Franco. I’m not Italian, doll, but my ancestors are from Portugal. On my mother’s side, some come from the Azores. Well, even those from the Azores came from the old country. We’re Portuguese. I understand there’s some Dutch in me, too.”
“I have Dutch ancestors.” Eleanor grinned as she twisted toward him, pleased to find a connection. “My family originally came from New York State. I think I also have German and Irish ancestors, too. I got my blonde hair from my mother, and she says it probably came from the Dutch in her family.”
