Lighthouse Escape
Keepers of the Light series, Book 13
by Zina Abbott
Stina slipped her shopping bag and reticule over her hand and, once they were hanging on her forearm, she held them tightly to her side. She patted the reticule. Upon hearing the reassuring crinkle of paper, she knew the letter her far gave her to mail was safe inside. She smiled as she recalled sneaking a peek at the address—the U.S. Lighthouse Board. She was aware her far sent a letter the day after his last replacement skipped out on them. Did this letter concern John Andersen? After Mr. Andersen volunteered to help Far with the lighthouse, did Far write and request that he stay as the replacement? Or maybe be his next assistant?
Stina gulped and gave her head a slight shake. Don’t get your hopes up, or you will be disappointed. She knew quite a bit about how things worked with the Lighthouse Board. Like most government departments, the only speed at which they operated was extremely slow. Besides, from what she recalled of John’s recounting of his assignments as a replacement, he did not yet have enough experience to be considered for a permanent assistant keeper position. As a sense of sorrow descended upon her, she fought it by resolutely lifting her chin and starting toward the back exit.
Thinking her brother was immediately behind her, Stina walked through the door John held open for her. She walked about a dozen steps from the building on the path to the pier before she turned her head to look behind her. John stopped, but she saw no sign of Brede. She stepped in a half circle and faced the back door. “Brede, please! We need to leave.” As she waited for her brother to appear, the man now standing a few feet in front of her filled her awareness. Now he is dried out and cleaned up, he definitely is handsome.
“I’m eating! After rushing home from school like I did so I could row you and Mr. Andersen to town, I’m hungry.” Brede’s voice came from inside the back door now barely cracked open.
“You’re always hungry.” Stina bit her lower lip. She immediately regretted her mumbled complaint. When it comes to favorably impressing John Andersen, this is not helping.
