“You’re traveling by ship, too?” Excitement in her voice, her facial expression perked up, and she smiled.
“A boat, doll. A tuna clipper, to be exact.”
“Oh.” She hesitated and her brow furrowed. “I heard there are salmon around here, but I didn’t know they had tuna, too.”
“They don’t. Tuna lives farther south, around Southern California. The tuna boats sail out of places like San Diego, where I come from. The friend who owns the boat I’m sailing on wanted to look into fishing for something else besides tuna, seeing what is involved in fishing for either halibut or salmon. I think he just wanted an excuse for a vacation. I’m along for the ride, but I plan to get a job up north for the summer. Something different than fishing for tuna, you know?”
“Yes, I know about looking for something different.”
Frankie watched as the pretty blonde lost her smile and dipped her chin so she looked at the ground. Movement on the walkway prompted him to glance long enough to see she wiggled her feet inside her snowboots. Snowboots this time of year? He realized he must have brought up a sore subject. “Where you headed, doll? I don’t just mean the restaurant. After that.” He hoped his softly spoken question did not spook her and send her running.
“Anchorage, Alaska.” She lifted her head once more and again smiled. “I have a job with the Spruce Telephone Company. They’re going to train me to become a switchboard operator.”
My next book will be A Watchman for Willow, the fourth book in the Mail Order Papa series. It is scheduled for release on September 18, 2023. For the book description and pre-order link, please CLICK HERE
