Saturday Snippet: She Will Not Be Bullied Into Submission

Today's Saturday Snippet is taken from

Marigold

Christmas Quilt Brides, Book 2

 by Zina Abbott

“All she needs is someone who can do construction. The parts are all numbered, and the kit comes with a full set of instructions of how to put the house together. Like Mari says, men usually aren’t good at reading and following instructions, but that is one thing she does well. So, even if you ran into trouble figuring out how everything is to go together, she would be able to find the answers. But, she does want at least one fireplace and chimney in the main parlor, which is not part of the kit, so she needs someone who knows how to build one.”

George stared at Rose briefly to make sure she had finished speaking. He had not caught every word spoken, but enough to get the gist of what was said. Do I really want to work with a headstrong woman like Miss Calloway? “The school board might decide to honor that contract—”

“Oh, they will. She’s not afraid to take the matter to court. She’s already been to Newkirk, the county seat, and talked to an attorney. He said the contract is solid. He agreed to represent Mari if she ends up having to sue.”

“I acknowledge this is not my business. However, I guess my question is, if this contract, which covers only the year, is fulfilled, what will happen if they refuse to hire her after that? Will she be able to afford the bigger house?”

“Mari knows they will not hire her after this school year. However, she will not be bullied into submission. She plans to use that house to set up her own girls’ academy. She wants the upstairs rooms for those who will live at the school full-time. The downstairs rooms she will use for classrooms.” Rose hesitated but focused her gaze on George. “My sister is a very capable woman. If anyone can successfully organize and run a private school, she can. George...Mr. Burdock? Would you be interested in discussing the job with my sister? I know some men aren’t comfortable dealing with an intelligent woman. She only becomes outspoken and a little disagreeable when men try to cheat her or talk down to her. I mean, I hope you’re an honest person and that wouldn’t be an issue.” She paused and bit her lip. “I haven’t talked you out of considering the job, have I?”
