Rescue Me (Mail-order Brides), Book 8

“Sometimes I wonder why I tolerate you, Dutchy.” Ash shook his head. “You sure know how to put a damper on having fun.”
“Right now, all I care about is getting home and visiting relatives. Once I get that obligation out of the way, I need to prepare everything for my business venture. Not to change the subject, but what happened to Culpepper and Peterson? I thought the two of them were planning to take the same train toward New York as you.”
“Probably feeding their faces or downing a few beers. And we aren’t exactly traveling to the same place. Peterson is headed toward upstate New York and Culpepper closer to New York City. My destination is Buffalo. Now, stop trying to change the subject.” Folding his arms, Ash gave Kurt a telling look. “The Dutch woman is running in circles like a lost goose.”
“I’ll see what I can do.” Kurt sighed with resignation. “Whether or not I understand her depends on her dialect. I had a devil of a time understanding Schwarz, at first.” He turned to walk toward the woman in question. He focused on her appearance and stopped walking. He did not need to hear her to know where she came from. He faced Ash, who remained by his side. “She’s Hessian, probably from the northern part—Schwälm, I think my aunt called it. My father never paid that much attention to where the family came from in Germany, but his sister did.”
“She’s Hessian! And how do you know that?”
“The red hat was the tip-off. Most Hessians I know are blonde, but there are plenty, like her, with brunette hair. Not only is she Hessian, she’s a single woman.”
“You can tell all that from a hat?” Eyebrows raised, Ash spread upraised palms.
