Stella felt her confidence drain. How could that lawman guess my brother has been running? If he had been able to establish himself in a new home with his assumed alias, the last thing she wished to do was raise questions that might force him to flee. She turned back to the rough-looking stranger, choosing to focus on his friendly gaze rather than his scars. As he held out his hand and asked to see the telegram, she knew, if she had any hope of receiving help while in Abilene, she could not afford to offend him. “Of course.” Stella handed it over. She tried to gauge his reaction while he studied the brief message.

A puzzled expression creased Harry’s brow. “This is from your brother?”

“Yes.”

“Then you’re married? I apologize, Mrs. Schoenfeld. You should have informed me when I made the incorrect assumption.”

Confused, Stella blinked several times. “What about that telegram gave you the impression that I’m married?”

“His name is Thomas Mitchell. His surname is different than yours.”

Stella’s breath caught. She rapidly blinked several times more before she stammered a reply. “Oh. Of course. Yes, I’m Mrs. Schoenfeld.”
