As she began to rattle off words in rapid German while she pointed toward the schedule, Kurt held up his hand, palm forward, in the universal gesture for halt. “Langsamer, bitte. Mein Deutsch ist nicht gut.” He no longer spoke the language as well as when he was a child and living around German-speakers. However, if he could convince her to talk slowly enough so his mind—now used to thinking in English—had time to translate, he should be able to communicate. He planned to visit his Aunt Lina, who mostly spoke German. Hopefully, by the time he left, he would again be thinking in German.

Closing her eyes, the woman released a breath before speaking more slowly in German. “Pardon me. Is the gentleman with whom you were speaking a policeman?”

“No. A soldier recently discharged from the army, same as me.” Kurt had wondered why she appeared reluctant to approach until after Ash, still in his infantry uniform, left his side. She obviously did not know the difference between a policeman’s uniform and an army uniform. More to the point, was she making an effort to avoid police officers?
