Saturday Snippet: This One is Named Know Thy Enemy

The following snippet is taken from

A Lawyer for Linton

Mail-Order Mama Book 8

“Look, Papa, see what she taught us?” Emma showed him the paper where she had recopied ten times the citation Samantha wrote down. “Those are called parent-sees.” She pointed to the parentheses.

“Yes, I see that.” Linton looked over at Samantha. “Foltz? Is this the case where Mrs. Clara Foltz, our first female California attorney, and Mrs. Gordon sued and won the right for women to attend Hastings Law School?”

“The same.” Samantha nodded. “She presented a strong argument.”

“Papa, here’s my law office picture.” Lilly shoved her paper up against Linton’s nose. “See? Emma and I are law-clerking.”

Linton took the paper and held it far enough away his eyes could focus on it. “Very nice, Lilly. It looks like you learned to be a good law clerk.”

“I did this one, too, Papa.” Emma handed her father a second paper. “Samantha says this one is named Know Thy Enemy.”

Minor v Happersett, 88 U.S. 162 (1875).” Linton read it and laughed. “This is the Supreme Court ruling denying women the vote by declaring you as persons who constitute a special class of nonvoting citizens.”

“Yes, a special class, just like convicted felons, idiots, and the insane are special classes of nonvoting citizens.” Samantha, a touch of acid in her voice, smirked.

look forward to sharing A Bride for Quentin. Its main character, Quentin Thompson, a telegraph operator, is a minor character in some of my Sweethearts of Jubilee Springs books. After considering the theme of Mistaken Identity Mail Order Brides, I decided this story would be perfect for this series, too.

This book is scheduled for release on June 25th. Please CLICK HERE to find the book description and preorder purchase link for A Bride for Quentin.
