Saturday Snippet: Wearing a Bemused Expression He Shook His Head

The following snippet is taken from

A Lawyer for Linton

Mail-Order Mama Book 8

Following a light lunch at the Barnes home, Samantha had barely settled at Linton’s dining room table with her portfolio of notepapers and the book from which she was taking notes in front of her when she heard the front door open. Her brow wrinkled as she puzzled over who could be walking in without knocking. Mrs. Corby already informed her she would be upstairs cleaning the bedrooms, and she had not seen the girls or their nanny. However, it was the nanny’s practice to keep the girls entertained outside in the backyard when Mrs. Corby worked upstairs. As she prepared to stand, she scooted her chair out.

“Where’s Belinda, Papa? Why didn’t she come back to bring us home?”

“Because Belinda hasn’t returned from taking her mother to the doctor.”

Samantha entered the center hallway in time to see Linton, his tie pulled loose and his hair rumpled where Lilly held onto his head, release Emma’s hand and set his youngest on her feet.

“You need to start walking the whole way home, Lilly. It’s not that far—only three blocks.”

“But it’s uphill, Papa. It’s too hard.”

“Hello, Linton. Mrs. Corby didn’t mention you’d be home this afternoon.” Samantha smiled as she viewed the domestic scene. She raised her gaze to meet Linton’s.

“Hello, Samantha.” Wearing a bemused expression, he shook his head. “It wasn’t scheduled. Belinda’s mother tripped and fell against the stove, so Belinda brought the girls to me.”

look forward to sharing A Bride for Quentin. Its main character, Quentin Thompson, a telegraph operator, is a minor character in some of my Sweethearts of Jubilee Springs books. After considering the theme of Mistaken Identity Mail Order Brides, I decided this story would be perfect for this series, too.

This book is scheduled for release on June 25th. Please CLICK HERE to find the book description and preorder purchase link for A Bride for Quentin.
