Pay attention to the church service. Yes, that was what Brunhilde should do. Eventually, she would find a job, and then she would probably long for these days of respite. She suspected, these two weeks of visiting in Onkel Friedrich and Tante Charlotte’s home before moving with Marie and Ernst to their apartment might prove to be the calm before the storm.

However, a new storm already raged within Brunhilde. She kept remembering Carl’s words. The honesty he shared was a sign of their friendship. It also revealed their relationship would go no further.

She was one of those limited, German-language-only women he would never want to marry. She would be an acceptable wife for a man who only wanted a housewife and mother of his children—one content to live and move only within the German community. I am not good enough for Carl. How many other men feel the same?
