Saturday Snippet: How She Wished She Could Be Somewhere Else

The following snippet was taken from

A Bride for Quentin

Mistaken Identity Mail Order Brides, Book 8

by Zina Abbott

“Oh, I don’t need to eat like this every day. I just need something decent and filling. I’d like a break from beans now and then.”

“I’m sure I can figure something out.” Offering a weak smile, Grace set her fork on her plate and looked at her lap. After he asked me to marry him, I felt impressed to come here. It will work out—won’t it?

“You aren’t finished already, are you, Grace?” Lizett leaned toward her. “They serve lovely desserts here.”

Grace looked up and forced a smile. “Oh, no. I just worried my napkin was starting to slide off my lap.” She glanced at her lap and pressed her fingertips to the folded cloth to lend truth to her words.

“Oh. All right. I was just worried something was wrong.” “As she lowered her voice, Lizett leaned closer to Grace. “You act like you’re somewhere else.”

Grace blinked. Somewhere else? How she wished she could be somewhere else. Some time else—back to the days she lived with Aunt Millie. Back to the days she could count on seeing him at church every Sunday. Out of the sea of blue uniforms, she could always quickly pick him out.
