Saturday Snippet: A Sense of Well-Being Settled Within

“Good morning…um, Guten Morgan.” The young man switched to German. “We have been waiting with impatience for you to arrive. We are happy and relieved to know you traveled here safely.” He focused his gaze on Ernst. “I am Carl Becker, your nephew.” He smiled and nodded as he briefly glanced at Brunhilde, Olga, and Alwin. His gaze settled on Marie. “You must be Tante Marie. I recognize you from your photograph. It is good to finally meet you in person.”

Brunhilde watched Marie grin with pleasure, probably to the reference of still being recognizable based on the wedding photograph taken over a decade earlier. As for the photograph of the Friedrich Becker family sent to Germany about a year after Ernst and Marie married, which Marie kept framed and hanging on the wall, Brunhilde realized he was the younger of two teenage boys. The infant in Aunt Charlotte’s arms was Lina, the baby girl welcomed after a gap of over ten years. With only two years separating them, Brunhilde wondered if Lina would be a good playmate for Olga.

As for how Brunhilde felt about meeting Carl, much of the anxiety she had been experiencing released its hold and eased away. A sense of well-being settled within. He is so friendly—and handsome. If he felt resentful about his relatives’ arrival, he hid it well. In spite of the wind-driven raindrops striking her face frequently enough to have become bothersome, the corners of Brunhilde’s lips tipped upward.
