“No. We’re back to why I came here in the first place.” Jesse stacked his plate on top of Devlin’s and shoved them to a corner of the table. “As you know, in spite of your objections to the matrimonial advert, I did respond. I’ve since decided that newspaper was worth the cost.”

“I can’t believe I let you in my house.” Devlin rolled his eyes and hunched his shoulders to hide the frisson of excitement that coursed through him.

“I already explained my plan. I even wrote your letter, and you signed it.”

“What letter? You read something, but I thought you asked me to sign a letter to Sheriff Lawry asking for help locating these rustlers.”

“Nope. I knew if I waited for you, it might be doomsday before you got around to writing. I wrote one on your behalf. That’s what you signed.”

“You tricked me, is what you’re saying.” Glaring, Devlin sat back and folded his arms.
